This tune commemorates the original Atholl Highlanders, the “77th Regiment of Foot” raised in Scotland by the 4th Duke of Atholl in 1777 to fight against the rebellious Americans. They trained in Ireland but the British surrendered before they set sail, and they were disbanded in 1783. Raised again in 1839 by the 6th Duke of Atholl as a Scottish ceremonial regiment, the Atholl Highlanders are the only remaining private army in Europe.
